Community colleges, universities and local vocational schools can provide excellent training and education opportunities for students who wish to obtain a vocational degree. Vocational schools seek to educate students through training, coursework, apprenticeships and hands-on experience in specialized technologies. Kentucky has several vocational schools that offer extensive training, coursework and degree programs for students who wish to obtain vocational training in order to pursue a career.

    • Western Kentucky University based in Bowling Green offers many undergraduate and graduate degrees in vocational fields including criminology systems, technical writing, health care systems, digital media systems. The main campus offers more than 90 majors in all. Western Kentucky University operates branch campuses in Madisonville and Owensboro that specialize in helping students earn technical degrees. WKU in both Owensboro offers a two plus two degree program where students will earn a two-year associate degree from one of Kentucky's community and technical colleges and then transfer to complete the last two years at WKU. There are also online programs in majors such as biology, child studies, family studies and library media education that are offered exclusively via online courses.

    West Kentucky Community and Technical College

    • West Kentucky Community and Technical College offers a number majors in vocational degree programs where students can earn an individual certificate, a diploma, or an Associate in Applied Science degree. These programs include diesel technology, criminal justice, clinical laboratory technician, information systems and engineering technology, just to name a few options. The school also offers a long list of health-related technical degrees, including nursing, pharmacy technology, radiography and surgical technology. West Kentucky Community and Technical College also offers the ACE Program, a flexible degree program that allows students to gain credit from work experience, take courses online, and enroll in courses during weekends and evenings that do not conflict with work schedules.

    Bowling Green Community College

    • Bowling Green Community College also is located in the western region of the state of Kentucky. The college works closely with Western Kentucky University. Bowling Green Community College offers many programs, certificate and two-year associate degrees. The college operates several divisions of study, including liberal arts and sciences, business and health sciences. The school uses an open admissions process, allowing many prospective students the ability to enroll and proceed toward an associate degree for transfer to a four-year institution. Students may choose between a wide variety of majors, including business management, information systems, nursing, general studies and technology, just to name a few. The college is particularly strong with vocational degrees in nursing, health care information systems, paramedicine and emergency medical technician.
