Kentucky Colleges & Technical Schools

Kentucky has many educational options available for students that don't want to leave the state for their post-secondary education. There are colleges and technical schools in Lexington and Louisville, as well as smaller schools in other, smaller cities throughout the state. There are state run schools in 16 communities throughout the state, but there are other, quality independent options available as well.
  1. Community Colleges

    • The Kentucky Community & Technical College System is a body that oversees 16 different schools throughout the state of Kentucky. Of those schools, four are stand-alone community colleges. The Henderson, Hopkinsville, Somerset and Madisonville community colleges are the schools in this system that are not also qualified as a technical college. These schools offer similar programs of study in areas such as dental assistant, health services and nursing. Of these four schools, Somerset has the widest selection of programs. Aviation Technology and Computer Aided Drafting are some of the programs available at Somerset but not at the other schools.

    Technical Schools

    • KCTCS also has 12 other schools that are part of its network. These are the 11 combination community college and technical schools, as well as one stand alone technical school. The stand alone technical college is Bowling Green Technical College. This school offers programs in technical disciplines such as air conditioning technology, automotive technology and collision repair technology. The technical and community colleges offer programs like these, and a variety of the programs offered at the four other community colleges.

    Independent Colleges

    • Each independent college within Kentucky is made unique by its own personal mission and goals. If a student finds an institution that's goals line up with their own, they may have found a school worth applying to. For instance, students that want to study at a very well respected institution for intellectuals in a small town may look at Centre College. According to its website, it is a top-50 liberal arts college. In addition, it attracts intellectual award winners such as Rhodes and Fulbright winners. Midway College is a women-only college focused on leadership; Pikeville College offers a wider selection of programs than some colleges, with a blend of associate, baccalaureate and professional programs available.

    Religious Colleges

    • There are a number of privately operated religious colleges in the state of Kentucky. These include the Clear Creek Baptist Bible College, St. Catherine College, Thomas More College and many others. Thomas More College is located in Crestview Hills and focuses on several areas including arts and sciences, business and nursing. Alice Lloyd College is a liberal arts college in Pippa Passes that includes maintaining an environment of good Christian values as one of the items on its mission statement. Other options for this type of college include the College of the Scriptures and the Kentuckiana Bible College
