Founded by abolitionists in 1855, Berea College was the first college in the South to offer education to men and women of all races. The college's motto--"God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth"--is drawn from Acts 17:26. Located 42 miles south of Lexington in the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains, Berea College awards bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees in 28 areas of study. The private, liberal arts college grants every student a full, four-year tuition scholarship and admits only academically promising, economically challenged students. According to the college, students are required to work 10 hours per week and are assigned on-campus jobs their freshman year; after the first year, students find the job of their choice. The college's acclaimed Ecovillage is a sustainable living residential and educational area that provides housing and childcare to students studying sustainability. Berea College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.
