Kentucky has eight state-supported, public universities. With 18 schools and colleges, the University of Kentucky is the largest post-secondary school in the state. The University of Louisville is also quite large, extending across three campuses. Located in Frankfort, Kentucky State University is the smallest public university in the state. Other public Universities in Kentucky include Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University, Murray State University, Northern Kentucky University and Western Kentucky University.
The commonwealth of Kentucky is home to a vast number of private universities and colleges, also referred to as independent colleges. A large majority of these private schools, including Brescia University, Asbury University, Transylvania University, Midway College, Simmons College of Kentucky and Union College are associated with various, particularly Christian, religious organizations. Nearly all of the few private institutions not affiliated with religious sects are for-profit schools, including Sullivan University and Beckfield College and Daymar College.
Nearly all of Kentucky's state-supported community colleges also specialize in technical educational, in addition to the general education and transfer classes nearly all community colleges offer. There are 16 community colleges spread across 68 separate campuses within the state. The largest, Jefferson Community & Technical College, has six campuses and an annual enrollment of nearly 15,000 students. Bluegrass Community & Technical College comes in a close second, with six campuses and just over 13,000 annual enrollments. Other community colleges in Kentucky include Madisonville Community College, Somerset Community College, Hazard Community & Technical College, Gateway Community & Technical College and Ashland Community & Technical College.
There are nearly as many trade schools in Kentucky as there are private colleges, and the three main trades taught are technology, beauty and healthcare. Some of the state's technical institutes include two ITT Technical Institute campuses, two Mayo Technical College campuses and five Jefferson Technical College campuses. The various accredited beauty institutes range from hair schools to cosmetology schools, and include Trend Setter's Academy of Beauty Culture, Elizabethtown Beauty School, Collins School of Cosmetology and Regency School of Hair Design. There are only a few healthcare trade schools in Kentucky, including Health Institute of Louisville, Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing and Federal Medical Center.
