Colleges & Universities in Georgia

The State of Georgia has two main bodies that govern educational institutions: the University System of Georgia (USG) and the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). USG governs some 37 institutions, including various campuses of the University of Georgia. TCSG has 28 technical colleges and two university technical divisions. Additionally, Georgia offers the student a variety of private liberal arts colleges and specialized colleges.
  1. University of Georgia, Athens

    • The University of Georgia (UGA) is a full-service university that serves students from undergraduate to doctorate levels and offers degrees in several specialty fields, such as veterinary medicine. According to the USG website, more than 34,000 students study around 140 different subjects. UGA is Georgia's oldest university, chartered in 1785. Most of the students come from Georgia itself, but 21 percent are from elsewhere. Athens is UGA's main campus, but the university comprises several external campuses, such as the one in Gwinnett.

    Georgia Military College

    • Georgia Military College (GMC) trains students to become officers of the U.S. Army and comprises a military technical school plus a liberal arts junior college and grade 6 to 12 preparatory school. This Georgia college offers a two-year undergraduate program that focuses on character building and a basic grounding in education prior to transfer to four-year institutions. Established in 1879, GMC's stated goal is to help people into higher education more affordably. Only 5 percent of the students live on campus, with the rest commuting in and getting their education around day jobs.

    Savannah Technical College

    • Savannah Technical College (STC) offers associate degrees, certificates and diplomas in a variety of technical fields, including computer technology and medicine. It also offers general education courses and transfers to other educational institutions. The college serves students in the Savannah region, with campuses in Savannah, Hinesville, Fort Stewart and Effingham County. STC is part of the TCSG.

    Georgia College and State University

    • Georgia College and State University (GCSU) is a public liberal arts college located in Milledgeville, Ga. Founded in 1889 as a teacher training institution for women, the college has evolved into an undergraduate college that provides a general education as well as some postgraduate programs. Around 40 majors are available in a full range of subjects from business to education.

    LaGrange College

    • LaGrange College started in 1831 as a women's college and has become a four-year private liberal arts and sciences college. LaGrange is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is Georgia's oldest private college. The school has strong offerings in arts and music but also provides courses in 53 professional and other academic fields, such as law, nursing and biology. The college offers some postgraduate programs. With only 1,000 or so students, the college focuses on individuals and leadership.
