Private Colleges in Kentucky

In addition to large, public schools like the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville and Western Kentucky University, Kentucky is home to a number of small, private colleges. These private colleges, many of which are religious institutions, prepare students for some of Kentucky's fastest-growing careers, such as computer science, finance and health care, according to the Kentucky Department for Workforce Investment.
  1. Alice Lloyd College

    • In 2010, "U.S. News & World Report" ranked Alice Lloyd College 43d among all baccalaureate colleges in the South. A non-denominational, Christian institution, the college's rural campus is home to approximately 600 students. Admission to the college is highly selective; only 10 percent of those who apply receive an invitation to enroll, according to the 2009 "Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."

      Among the courses of study offered at the college are biology, business administration, English, education, pre-engineering, pre-pharmacy and history. All students must participate in work-study programs at the school in order to graduate. The school sponsors 10 intercollegiate sports teams for men and women, and students may participate in one of the 16 student groups and activities on campus, including choir, religious organizations and school television and radio stations.

    Thomas More College

    • The Roman Catholic Church founded Thomas More College in 1921, and since that time, the school has grown to an enrollment of more than 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students. The college is situated on a 100-acre campus in Crestview Hills, a suburban community less than 10 miles from Cincinnati, Ohio. The college's business, nursing and biology programs are its largest, according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges," and the college offers a specialized, self-paced baccalaureate degree for working adults.

      Thomas More College also grants Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Business Administration degrees. These two graduate-level programs were ranked 55th among all master's degree curricula at Southern universities from "U.S. News & World Report" in 2010. Students in most majors can participate in paid, co-operative work placements while attending classes. Study abroad is offered in more than 15 countries. Among the activities available to students are 12 intercollegiate sports teams and more than 25 student groups.

    Berea College

    • Berea College is private, nondenominational liberal arts college approximately 40 miles from Lexington. The school is notable as it provides education at no cost to all of its 1,500 students for all four years of their education through funds given by grants and specialized scholarships. Because of its free education, the college receives a large number of applicants each year, from which it admits approximately 25 percent, reports the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."

      Bachelor's degrees granted by the college include agriculture, management, drama, industrial design, foreign languages, computer science, applied mathematics, nursing, pre-dentistry and economics. Courses in Christian studies are required for all students. Internships are available in most majors, and the college offers study abroad opportunities in several countries. Eighteen intercollegiate sports teams and 55 student groups are located on campus.
