Mississippi Private Colleges

Mississippi boasts three private colleges that are in or near the state capital, Jackson. Millsaps College and Belhaven University are both in Jackson, while Mississippi College is less than 10 miles away in Clinton. Each college has Christian roots: one from the Methodist Church, one from the Baptist Church and the third from the Presbyterian Church.
  1. Belhaven University

    • Belhaven University in Jackson is a private Christian liberal arts school with an annual enrollment of almost 3,000 students, offering eight undergraduate and four graduate degrees. The Presbyterian-oriented school also provides professional degrees in five areas of concentration. Belhaven has 27 areas of study for undergraduate students and graduate degrees in business administration, public administration, education and teaching. The school fields 13 men's and women's athletic teams that compete in nine sports in the Mid-South Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

    Millsaps College

    • Millsaps College is a private Methodist institution in Jackson with an annual enrollment of around 1,200 students. Millsaps offers undergraduate degrees in 34 major study areas and graduate degrees in business administration and accounting. The writing program at Millsaps was nationally ranked in 2009 by "U.S. News & World Report" as one of the top programs in the country. Millsaps fields 14 men's and women's athletic teams that compete in nine sports in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in NCAA Division III.

    Mississippi College

    • Mississippi College, founded in 1826, is the largest private school in Mississippi, with almost 5,000 students. Mississippi College, operated by the Mississippi Baptist Convention, offers undergraduate students 80 major areas of study, plus graduate degrees and the Mississippi College School of Law. Athletics are an important part of Mississippi College, and the school fields 16 men's and women's athletic teams that compete in 11 sports. The school is a member of the American Southwest Conference on the Division III level of the NCAA.
