How to Write an Extended Report

Writing a report is an important skill that can be applied to academic settings and careers. Reports are used to condense large amounts of information in a concise manner that is informative. Extended reports allow writers to go into a great deal of depth in any given topic, a skill that is useful in many arenas.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your topic. If the topic is not assigned, choose a topic that interests you and one that you feel you can write a thorough paper on. If it is assigned to you, pick a specific field or a specific theme that you wish to delve into in your report.

    • 2

Research your report. Go to a library and do general research on your topic. Be sure to write down the references of any books or encyclopedias that you are getting information from.

    • 3

Write an outline of your paper. An outline should sketch out the basics of your paper, including what you want it to accomplish. If you are making a specific point, the outline should diagram how you get to that point. If you are simply being informative, make sure that the outline reflects every aspect of the subject that you wish to explain, going into suitable depth on each point.

    • 4

Write an introduction. The introduction should summarize your report, outlining the basic points in your paper. Start it out with a strong thesis sentence that highlights the purpose of your writing.

    • 5

Write the body of your paper. Start each paragraph with a topic sentence that reflects the theme of the paragraph. Back up this topic sentence with your research, using quotes, statistics and facts to make your point.

    • 6

End your paper with a strong conclusion. This should sum up your paper and reflect your introductory statements.

    • 7

Write a bibliography. Your bibliography or works cited should list the references you used to write your paper. Make sure that you have written your bibliography according to the format that is required for your report. If you have been assigned the report, ask the person doing the assigning for the correct format.

    • 8

Proofread your report. An extended report is longer than most normal reports and will have many overlooked mistakes. Enlist the aid of a friend to help you proofread the paper. Make the necessary corrections before handing in the report.
