Academic Treks College offers students an accredited summer-abroad experience that gives them valuable education and experience, as well as letting them make a difference to a community or environment, in another part of the world. All Academic Treks College programs incorporate community service, from 10 hours to 55 hours of service work. Depending on the focus of the trip, students work with volunteer groups like Habitat for Humanity, the Peace Corps or the Caribbean Conservation Corporation. Students attending trips with a focus on marine science would participate in community service projects like assisting researchers, volunteering at marine parks and working on outreach programs with local villages and children. Students who attend language programs might do manual labor, work at day camps or volunteer in an orphanage.

SeaTrek gives students interested in marine science and marine biology the opportunity to further their knowledge by working in the field. At the same they provide volunteer services to scientists, researchers and the environment of the Caribbean. Students can earn research credits and community service credits toward their college degree requirements. In each of SeaTrek's five marine science programs, students can choose to complete 15 hours or more of service. A student can create their own project with the assistance of a lead marine biologist, or she can participate in one of the group service projects. Group service projects include turtle-tagging and monitoring, reef fish identification and coral reef ecology. The information gathered goes to the British Virgin Islands government and used in monitoring programs and conservation efforts.
