Private Colleges & Universities in Texas

In addition to large, public institutions like the University of Texas, Tarleton State and Texas A&M, the state of Texas is home to a number of private colleges and universities. Found in locations throughout the state, these schools include both religious and nonreligious institutions. In addition to traditional classroom learning, the private colleges and universities in Texas offer less traditional educational opportunities for students like travel abroad and work programs.
  1. Wiley College

    • The Methodist Episcopal Church founded Wiley College in 1873 in Marshall Texas, a small town in the eastern portion of the state approximately 35 miles from Shreveport, Louisiana. A traditionally-Black institution, the school is home to less than 1,000 students. The school's small size allows for an average class size of 15, giving an opportunity for all students to receive one-on-one attention from faculty. Among the school's bachelor's degree programs are business administration, hospitality management, communications, English, music, education, history, philosophy, religious studies and sociology. Classes in Biblical studies are required for all students. The school sponsors a number of intercollegiate sports teams, including baseball, women's volleyball, and men's and women's basketball and track.

    Austin College

    • In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked Austin College sixty-eighth among all liberal arts colleges in the United States. Located 60 miles north of Dallas in the town of Sherman, Austin College is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America. Business administration and psychology are among the most popular majors with the school's more than 1,200 undergraduate students. The biology and political science programs are the highest rated academically, according to the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. To graduate, all students must complete a minor or second major. The college offers study abroad programs in more than 50 countries and internships both in the greater Dallas area and Washington, D.C. In addition to state and federal financial aid programs, work study programs are available for eligible students. Students can participate in twelve intercollegiate sports teams, 16 Greek organizations and 50 student groups.

    Rice University

    • Situated in Houston, Rice University is a private, nonreligious institution with more than 3,200 students. The school received the seventeenth place ranking among all universities in the United States from U.S. News and World Report in 2010. Admission to the university is highly selective, fewer than one-fourth of those who apply receive an invitation to attend the school, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The university's baccalaureate programs include biology, architecture, music, visual and performing arts, engineering, exercise science, foreign languages, economics, public affairs and sociology. The university offers a guaranteed acceptance pre-medicine program, which allows students to immediately begin courses at the Baylor College of Medicine in Dallas upon graduation from a bachelor's program. Internship opportunities are available in most majors, and study abroad is encouraged for all students. The school is home to more than 35 intercollegiate sports teams and 200 student activities.
