Texas Technical Colleges

Texas is home to more than 150 colleges, state-funded universities, private universities, technical colleges and other institutions of higher learning. A technical school is a two-year college that prepares students for skilled careers such as welding, culinary arts, office administration, aviation maintenance, medical assisting and other trades. These types of colleges are less expensive than four-year universities, and some are state-funded.
  1. Texas State Technical College

    • Texas State Technical College (TSTC) in Waco has been providing education for students since 1968 and is part of the Texas State Technical college system, the only state-supported technical-college system in Texas. The facility offers a variety of technical associate degrees, certificate programs and workforce skills. Students gain hands-on experience in laboratories and spend more than 50 percent of their time using and working with the tools and equipment they will use in their future jobs. TSTC offers career training in areas such as information technology, engineering, business, health, science, transportation and aviation. The college also offers basic courses such as English and social sciences, which are transferable to other colleges. Distance learning is another option available to help students with conflicting work schedules. This provides students with the flexibility to plan a course load they can complete at home. An average of 90 percent of TSTC graduates find job placement after graduation.

    Everest College

    • Westwood College, located in Dallas, is a technical college dedicated to providing career-focused programs that prepare students with the knowledge, skills and credentials they need to start careers. Westwood has a reputation for being a leader in career-focused education and offers 25 different programs, including business administration, criminal justice, computer networking, medical assisting, construction management, graphic design, drafting and information technology. Students receive hands-on training from professional instructors and are able to train with tools and equipment they will use in their future careers. Westwood college also offers financial aid assistance, scholarship programs and general education courses such as creative writing and public speaking. Online learning is also an option designed to assist those students with conflicting work schedules. Westwood has additional campuses in Houston and Fort Worth.
