William Paterson University offers a Sound Engineering course of study. Students learn through lectures and lab work, and industry professionals are available for consultation. The program combines rigorous coursework with theoretical and practical methodologies. Freshmen begin with music theory, along with math and physics classes to enable students to learn terminology and aid in problem solving, The ability to understand music from a musician's perspective is stressed for sound engineering students. The course includes a senior project creating a musical recording and a portfolio for career purposes. An active chapter of the Audio Engineering Society, the only professional society devoted exclusively to this field, is located on campus.

Rutgers University School of Continuing Education offers an online course leading to a certificate as a music production specialist. The 200-hour course will familiarize students with software systems used by industry professionals. The first session of classes includes an introduction to the music industry, including record industry and music merchandising. The second session concentrates on digital audio workstations and other technical training. Graduates may work in fields such as movie, video and theater production, and the live and recorded music industry.
