New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) is the oldest medical college in New Jersey. It began as the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (SHCMD) in 1954. Ten years later, it was purchased by the State of New Jersey and renamed New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry (NJCMD). In 1970, it was combined with Rutgers Medical College and became New Jersey Medical School. Healthcare partners affiliated with NJMS are University Hospital, University Behavioral HealthCare, Veterans Affairs New Jersey Healthcare System, Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, and Hackensack University Medical Center.

Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is the former Rutgers University Medical College. It has an academic program that has over twenty departments, centers, and institutes. A few of these are the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the Child Health Institute of New Jersey, and the Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey. Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is affiliated with over thirty different hospitals, including Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

The School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) at UMDNJ began as a program within the Rutgers Medical College. It is well known for its CARES (Child Abuse Research, Education & Service) Institute and its New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging (NJISA). SOM is affiliated with Kennedy Health System/University Medical Center, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, Lourdes Medical Center, Christ Hospital and South Jersey Healthcare.
