How to Become Certified in Insurance Billing and Coding

As a certified insurance billing and coding specialist, you will be a member of a hospital or clinic and be responsible for translating medical terminology into numerical codes. The codes that you create are required by insurance companies to reimburse providers for services, mostly in the case of Medicaid and Medicare. The codes are also used by public health experts and other researchers to track infection, diagnosis and treatment rate statistics among medical facilities. You likely will be required by an employer to have graduated from a two-year associate's degree program in medical coding and billing, and have certification.
