Hallmark College has a program in medical billing and coding which leads to a certificate as a health information specialist. The program is made up of 34.5 credit hours and completed in either 28 weeks or 32 weeks, depending on if you are a full-time day or part-time evening student. Students learn how to create, analyze, interpret and manage medical records and health care data, as well as how to identity and code medical procedures. The program trains students in the standard software and equipment for the industry, and upon graduation, students can take the Certified Coding Associate examination. The classes include medical terminology, administrative procedures, insurance and an externship.

Walters State Community College has a two-semester program which leads to a medical coding technical certificate. Students must maintain a minimum of a "C" average at all times or risk dismissal. Admission into the program is dependent on the student completing a health form and submitting proof of professional liability insurance. The course includes instruction in basics of ICD-9 and CPT/HCPCS coding, intermediate ICD-9 coding and advanced coding for reimbursement.

Penn Foster Career School offers a distance-learning program in medical coding and billing. Graduates receive a diploma and are qualified to sit for the American Health Information and Management Association's (AHIMA) certified coding specialist exam, or the American Academy of Professional Coder's certified professional coder exam. The course covers training in medical law and ethics, medical terminology, methods of reimbursement, anatomy and physiology and medical information management. Penn Foster is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council.
