On the Charlotte campus of Kaplan College, students can earn a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Diploma. The program provides training in general office procedures, medical terminology, occupational transcription, records management, medical coding, database concepts, and more. Students will receive instruction through classroom lecture and hands-on laboratory courses. In addition to the coursework, students will also complete a medical billing and coding externship at an approved local healthcare facility. The program is available at five of the college locations throughout North Carolina including the campuses in Cary, Fayetteville, Greenville, Jacksonville, and Wilmington. Through the program, students will learn medical procedure coding, insurance and reimbursement procedures, and healthcare standards. Located in Durham, the North Carolina Health Information Training Institute is the only program in the state that is accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The institute offers a Certificate of Achievement Program in Medical Coding that prepares students to become certified medical coders. The program curriculum includes coursework in medical terminology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, along with basic and advanced diagnosis and procedural coding courses. Prior to completion of the program, students can enroll in a review course that will better prepare them for the national certification exam. North Carolina Health Information Training Institute also offers online courses as well as a medical coding instructor training program.

Southeastern Institute, located in Charlotte, offers a full and part-time training programs to prepare students for a career in medical billing and coding. Students will complete a series of medical terminology, human anatomy, and coding courses along with a course in medical billing and office procedures. During the program, students will also receive workplace experience through an internship at a local insurance or health care facility.
