Massage Schools in North Carolina

Massage therapy is a great option for those interested in natural healing and holistic living. According to the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), in 2007 approximately 50 million Americans received 318 million massage treatments. Massage therapy has become an integral part of the health industry.



Three steps are required to become a qualified massage therapist in North Carolina. First, you should complete a course or training with a minimum of 500 hours practice in the field. Second, pass a National Certification Massage Exam to become certified in massage therapy. Lastly, you should meet the testing requirements for license, granted by the North Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy.
  1. Center for Massage & Natural Health

    • The Center for Massage & Natural Health has provided massage courses in North Carolina since its relocation in 1998. The school was originally founded in 1990 in Santa Barbara, California, by Peggy M. Huff. Today the school is situated on a 24-acre private campus in the serene Appalachian area. The campus includes an education center, student housing and retreat center for day or overnight rentals.

      Massage courses are certified through the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) and approved by the North Carolina Board Association. The massage therapy program is 600 hours with full-time courses over six months. Students are required to complete a clinical practice routine on real clients while attending classes. Weekend workshops are available for current massage therapists who seek continuing education credits.

      Attend a career day or open house event held monthly at the campus for a personal tour and more information. Classes are approved for federal financial aid through Title IV, and other payment options are offered upon request. You can submit an application online for review.

    Body Therapy Institute

    • Body Therapy Institute (BTI) was founded in 1983 by Rick Rosen. BTI is the first school in North Carolina to be accredited by COMTA. The school is situated on a 150-acre country campus at South Wind Farm. In 2009, it was reported that 100 percent of its graduates passed the National Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam.

      BTI offers several courses in the massage field. The massage therapy diploma program requires students to attend a discovery event, submit an application and interview for admission. Daytime classes are completed within eight months. An evening and weekend program is offered for completion in 12 months. Continuing education workshops are held in massage therapy, bodywork and somatic practice. A teacher certification program, designed for those interested in teaching massage therapy is available. Somatic & Embodiment Leadership coaching certification and Bio-dynamic Craniosacral Therapy are other course offerings.

      Campus tours are held monthly. Admission requires attending a three-hour hands-on discovery event before submitting your application. After your application has been submitted, an interview with the admission committee will be set up. BTI is approved for Veterans Benefits and approved for loans through SLM Financial.

    The Edmund Morgan School

    • The Edmund Morgan School of Neuromuscular & Massage Therapy offers hands-on courses within a beautiful and relaxing facility. The 650-hour Diploma program is provided in clinical neuromuscular and structural bodywork. Additional courses are given in acupressure, hydrotherapy and tai chi. Each course offers a small class size with only 16 students. Continuing education classes can be completed onsite or through home study.

      Day and evening programs are available for a Diploma in Massage Therapy. Full-time day classes are completed in six months. Part-time evening classes are completed in 12 months. Financial aid options include, discount for pre-payment of total tuition, in-house tuition financing with monthly payments and the GI Bill for veterans and military members.
