Respiratory therapists specialize in treating, managing and caring for patients with breathing problems or disorders of the cardiopulmonary system. Respiratory therapists are responsible for supervising respirator therapy technicians, administering respiratory treatments and consulting with physicians as part of the patient's overall care plan.     • The University of North Carolina Charlotte offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Respiratory Therapy. It is a distance-learning program with online courses such as Professional Roles and Dimensions of Respiratory Therapy, Evidence Based Practice and Information Technology Applications in Healthcare. Applicants should already have an associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy. Prerequisites for admission include a current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) license and a total GPA of 2.0 or better from the Associate Degree program. Students will also be required to take additional elective courses and complete 120 hours in order to graduate. Tuition is $102.15 per credit hour for in-state students and $460.65 per credit hour for out-of-state students.

    Catawba Valley Community College

    • Catawba Valley Community College's Respiratory Therapy Program was launched in 1991 and accepts 15 students each year. Prerequisites include possessing a high school diploma or GED. The program can be completed in five semesters or stretched out over a longer time frame. Graduates of Respiratory Therapy Program receive an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree and are eligible to take the National Board for Respiratory Care entry-level exam. After successfully passing the exam, students are eligible to take the Advanced Practitioner Examination. To earn the RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist) credential, students must pass the Advanced Practitioner exam. Estimated tuition is approximately $4,500.

    Durham Technical Community College

    • The Respiratory Therapy program at Durham Technical Community College combines classroom learning with clinical laboratory and hospital practice. Classes are scheduled during the day; clinical rotations are completed at local hospitals and are conducted in the evening and daytime. The program is designed to last for five semesters and gives graduates an A.A.S. degree. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the National Registry Examinations, successful completion of which will result in the RRT credential. Tuition is approximately $1,540.00 per semester.
