Texas Nurse Tech Programs

Nurse techs, also called nurse aides, perform routine tasks and provide hands-on care to patients while they are under the supervision of medical and nursing staff. Between 2008 and 2018, the job growth for this occupation is expected to increase by 18 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. These Texas-based programs prepare students for entry into the nursing field as a nurse tech, or aide.
  1. Tarrant County College

    • Tarrant County College offers a 90-hour nurse aide course that prepares students who are not licensed professionals to provide bedside care that is nursing-related in health care facilities. This program is approved by the Department of Human Services in Texas and prepares students to enter into the nursing field as a certified nursing assistant. Students may choose to enter into this program in the spring semester or the fall semester and will be required to take the nurse aide exam as a part of the actual program. In order for students to begin classes, they must take a reading test in which they must call at least three months prior to the start of classes.

    Lamar Institute of Technology

    • The Lamar Institute of Technology is a member of the Texas State University System and offers a nurse aide program that prepares students to become a certified nurse assistant (CNA). Students will study basic health and biology coursework and will have a hands-on learning experience at healthcare facilities. The coursework will have an emphasis on CPR, safety regulations, patient care and infection control. Students will take classes such as recording vital signs, basic nutrition, communication and personal hygiene. This program prepares students for the State of Texas certification exam.

    Houston Community College

    • Houston Community College offers a certified nurse aide certificate program that lasts for six weeks of study. Students who have the experience as a nurse aide without a license may opt to enroll in the fast track option that lasts for two weeks. This program will teach students the knowledge, skills and abilities that are needed in order to care for residents in long-term care facilities. In this program, students will learn the skills, concepts and theory in relation to specialized equipment, regulations, procedures and laws that are within the social systems that are associated with this occupation. Students who complete this program will be able to work in long-term care facilities, hospitals and doctor's offices. Graduates will also be able to take the CNA certification exam.
