Texas Animation Programs

Animation is an important part of the entertainment, gaming and advertising industries. Programs in animation prepare students to pursue careers in fields such as film, television broadcasting and other electronic media. Students may learn drawing, media arts and computer graphics. A wide range of animation programs is offered at colleges and universities across Texas.
  1. The Art Institute of San Antonio

    • The Art Institute of San Antonio offers a bachelor of fine arts in media arts and animation. The program provides instruction in areas such as development of story lines, layout of scenes, background design and special effects. Students learn about illustration, 3-D computer modeling and compositing. The program focuses on practical learning experiences. The program requires 180 credit hours. Students are also required to compile a portfolio that showcases their skills for potential employers.

    Collin College

    • Collin College offers an associate of applied science degree and certificates in 3-D animation/game art and digital video. It also offers a marketable skills achievement award for 3-D animation. The 3-D animation program focuses on acquisition of skills aimed at the entertainment, corporate communication and advertising industries. Students learn about 2-D and 3-D animation methods and graphics. The game art component focuses on the animation skills needed for computer gaming. The digital video program concentrates on skills to create digital video presentations. Students learn how to work with a variety of digital equipment, create storyboards and use software to edit video footage.

    Sam Houston State University

    • Sam Houston State University offers a bachelor of fine arts degree in computer animation. The computer animation program provides instruction on the principles and methods used to create animated images for electronic media including computers, film, videos, games and the Internet. It educates students on a variety of animation topics including 3-D modeling, video compositing, character modeling, motion graphics, texturing and visualization of virtual settings. Students also learn about animation history and modern theories. The computer animation program includes two designated computer labs with access to the same animation software used in animation and gaming studios. The bachelor of fine arts in computer animation requires 120 total credit hours.
