Dental Assistant Programs in Texas

Dental assistants provide patient care and chair-side assistance; they also perform various duties in the office and laboratory. Assistants are trained to perform a variety of restorative and aesthetic procedures, and there are several schools offering dental assistant programs in Texas.
  1. Del Mar College

    • Del Mar College's dental assistant program offers students either a certificate of achievement or an Associate in Applied Science degree in dental assisting; both programs are accredited by the American Dental Association. Upon completion of either the certificate or degree program, students are eligible to sit for the state exam. The certificate program lasts four semesters, and students take classes in dental science and advanced dental assisting applications. Students also complete a clinical practicum during the third and fourth semesters. The degree program lasts for six semesters, and students must complete general education requirements as well as learn integrated software applications, human anatomy and physiology.

    Grayson County College

    • Grayson County College offers a dental assistant program is accredited by the American Dental Association. The instructional portion of the program lasts 10 and a half months; students learn how to expose and process x-rays, how to assist the dentist with a variety of restorative and aesthetic techniques and how to perform the basics of office management. Clinicals are completed during the summer at an outside dental facility. Students who complete this program are prepared to sit for the certification exam by the Dental Assisting National Board.

    Texas State Technical College

    • Texas State Technical College offers a dental assistant program that is also approved by the American Dental Association; students who complete this program will receive a certificate of completion. Upon graduation, students are prepared to take the Dental Assisting National Board exam for certification. Students learn about chair-side assisting, dental science and human relations as well as dental radiology. During the third semester, students complete clinical training in an outside dental facility.
