The J. Sargent Reynolds Community College offers a Dental Assisting Certificate Program through its School of Nursing and Allied Health. The program is designed to teach students practical skills such as chairside dental assisting, preparation of materials for making dental impressions, and preparation of materials for procedures such as fillings and restorations. The course includes training in recognizing dental emergencies and taking dental radiographs, Students are also trained in how to provide dental education to patients and in laboratory and office management techniques.The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
The college also offers certificates in Pre-Practical Nursing and Dental Assisting and a Dental Assisting Career Studies Certificate.

ECPI College of Technology's Medical Careers Institute (MCI) specializes in medical careers offering associate degree programs as well as certificate programs. MCI is very selective with their students and require a tour and meeting with a career advisor prior to qualifying for admissions.
The dental assistant student will experience extensive hands-on training to successfully prepare them for achieving their careers. Small class sizes are available allowing students to receive more personalization. Focused programs will permit students to graduate faster. Students will be educated in clinical, radiographic and administrative procedures enabling them to qualify for entry-level positions as a dental assistant. Instruction will include an externship allowing students the opportunity to utilize their new skills in the real world. The externship will provide hands-on practice with office duties as well as patient contact responsibilities.
