In order to take the test, applicants must complete and submit an application packet to the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG). The application packet must include an exam application (see Resources), supplementary documents and the $100 application fee. Furthermore, you must provide proof of having registered as an apprentice for at least four years. All original documents should be notarized and signed.
The exam itself covers sections of the current edition of the Michigan Electrical Code. This is generally regarded as entry-level industry knowledge. You should take care to study the Code and familiarize yourself with the following subjects (see Resources): Grounding And Bonding, Branch Circuits, Wire Connections and Devices, Conductors, General Knowledge of Electrical Trade, Motors and Control of Motors and Equipment, Services and Feeders, General Use Equipment, Overcurrent Protection, Raceways, Special Occupancies and Equipment, Boxes, Cabinets, Panelboards, Non-Raceway Enclosures, Low Voltage Circuits and Equipment, Lightning and Lamps, and State Laws, Rules and Code Amendments. You will need to score at least a 75 percent to pass the exam.
Make sure to bring a current picture ID with you, as well as a non-programmable calculator and at least two No. 2 pencils. Bring along an unmarked copy (i.e. no notes, highlighting, paper clips) of the National Electrical codebook, since the Bureau of Construction Codes will no longer supply the codebooks onsite, and index tabs, not homemade varieties. No markings will be allowed within the codebook. Also, be sure leave your cell phone at home, as mobile devices are not allowed at the test site.
