The dental assistant program at Remington College in Nashville, Tennessee, can be completed in eight months. Students who are accepted into the program take eight different learning modules. The first seven modules include courses in oral anatomy, radiology basics, dental office procedures, computer applications and chair-side assisting. The final module is a 160-hour externship, where students gain real-life experience working as a dental assistant in a dental clinic under the supervision of a licensed dentist. This program prepares students to work as dental assistants through instruction in computers, mathematics, CPR, pharmacology, office administration, radiography, dental procedures, anatomy and physiology and dental equipment. The majority of training occurs under the areas of chair-side assisting, maintaining patient records and taking x-rays. Following the completion of coursework, students are required to attend a 60-hour internship, as well as an additional 180 hours at the same or different dentistry establishment.
