Online Dental Assistant Programs

Dental assistants perform tasks such as collecting information from patients, storing and tracking dental tools and billing patients for services.They know medical coding and often access read patient records to retrieve information regarding cavities, gum inflammation, bridges and fillings. Assistants also schedule appointments for cleanings and surgery. Online dental assistant programs provide education that prepares students to take the dental assistant national board exam and receive a dental assistant license.

    • Penn Foster Career School offers an online program that covers clinical and administrative procedures. Although this program is online, the dental assistant must still be familiar with the tools available in a dentist's office. According to the Penn Foster website, students receive gloves, a protective mask, cotton rolls, syringes and other tools as learning aids. This school splits its course into instruction sets; students receive a new set when they have mastered the course material in the previous one.

    University of North Dakota

    • The University of North Dakota offers both clinical and administrative dental assistant programs. College credit is not available for these courses, as they provide vocational training for a specific job. Clinical courses cover subjects such as oral health and patient care. In the administrative program, topics include patient record management, dental terminology, billing and insurance.
