Dental Assistant Programs in Ontario

According to the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, more than 11,500 registered dental hygienists are in Ontario, Canada, working to educate patients on proper mouth and teeth care, assess gum condition, administer treatments such as cleanings and scalings, and contribute to the daily running of the dental office. Residents of Ontario who are interested in careers as dental hygienists have a variety of schools, offering the two one-year-long certificate programs required by Canadian law.
  1. Canadore College

    • Canadore College offers the level I and II dental assisting programs, each one-year long. Students take subjects such as Dental Radiology, Topical Application, Oral Hygiene Instruction, Application of Desensitizers, Removal of Rubber Dam, Application of Treatment Liners and Selective Rubber Cup Polishing. Students interested in further education may take additional coursework in areas such as oral irrigation devices and polishing amalgam restorations. Students require a high school diploma (students over the age of 19 without a diploma will take the college’s Mature Student Test), immunizations, two-step tuburculosis test, medical clearance card, CPR training and basic life support training. Graduates become certified by the Canadian Dental Assistant’s Association and may join the Ontario Dental Assistants’ Association.

    Algonquin College

    • Algonquin’s School of Health and Community Services offer two levels of dental assisting certificates, each taking one year and including such coursework as Restorative Feedback, Dental Materials Theory, Nutrition and Oral Health, Dental Materials Lab, Radiography Theory and Restorative Clinic. Applicants must have a high school diploma or training equivalent; immunizations and a health exam are required. Students must also take a 13-hour CPR course in their first week of school and keep current on their certification. Graduates will be granted certification from the Ontario Dental Assistants Association.
