Dental Assistant Programs at Community Colleges in Toronto

The Canadian Dental Association estimates that there are over 18,000 licensed dentists in the country. Since every dentist is supported by one or more dental technicians or assistants, the profession is a sizable driver of employment opportunities. In Toronto, there are a number of colleges that train students to become dental assistants.
  1. Toronto College of Dental Hygiene and Auxiliaries

    • Located close to Downsview Park, Toronto College of Dental Hygiene and Auxiliaries is a private institution accredited by the Canadian Dental Association. The school offers diplomas in Dental Hygiene as well as Dental Assisting. The Dental Assisting program is a nine-month program that teaches the skills required to support a dentist during procedures. Students will take courses in biology, anatomy, microbiology and pharmacology, and then gain practical training and experience on state of the art dental equipment.

    George Brown College

    • Located at the foot of Toronto's famous castle, George Brown College offers a two- semester Dental Assisting program. Students receive classroom training in dental procedures, infection control and safety protocols. Students gain practical experience in the college dental labs, working alongside students in the Dental Hygiene and Restorative Dental Hygiene programs. Graduates have experienced a 90 percent placement rate after leaving the program. Students who seek additional training are eligible to apply for Dental Assisting Program, Level 2.

    Medix Health Care College

    • Located just off Highway 401, Medix Health Care College is conveniently located at Lawrence Square. Medix Health Care College offers training that includes classroom theory in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, oral hygiene, dental radiology and nutrition. The college offers hand-on training in its modern laboratory setting, including sessions on preliminary patient examinations, charting and instrument handling and sterilization. The school works with students to set up a field placement in their chosen neighborhood.
