Chesapeake College was founded in 1965 as Maryland’s first community college. Its dental assisting program consists of three courses: Basic Dental Assisting, Oral Radiography Techniques and Oral Radiography–Clinical. This includes a total of 70 hours in the classroom and eight hours in a clinical site. To apply, students must have a high school diploma or GED. and score a minimum of 75 on the college’s Reading Comprehension Placement Test.

The dental hygiene program offered at Howard Community College is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. Through a partnership with Howard Community College in Texas, the Maryland campus offers a comprehensive roster of courses that leads to certification as a dental assistant. To apply, students must be at least 18 years of age, complete work in a clinical environment for a minimum of 30 hours and take courses, such as Introductory Chemistry, Microbiology and Anatomy.

The College of Southern Maryland offers courses in dental assisting that lead to an associate’s degree in pre-dental hygiene. Courses offered include Chair Side Dental Assisting and Oral Radiology. The college also offers career placement assistance for graduates.
