Dental Assistant Programs in Indiana

Dental assistants are trained to perform various duties within the office, with patients as well as in the laboratory. There are certificate and degree programs in Indiana that are approved by the American Dental Association that will provide you with the education and training needed to begin a career as a dental assistant.
  1. Indiana University--Purdue University Fort Wayne

    • Purdue University Fort Wayne offers a certificate program in dental assisting. This program consists of 13 courses, which include dental materials and clinical science as well as oral anatomy and radiology. To be accepted into the program, students must complete four pre-dental assisting courses; these include fundamentals of speech communication, medical terminology, elementary composition and elementary psychology. There are also three additional preferred courses: introduction to dentistry, human anatomy and physiology one and two. The pre-dental assisting and preferred admission courses must be completed by mid-May for acceptance into the fall semester.

    International Business College

    • The International Business College offers an Associate degree in dental assisting; this program takes 16 months to complete. Students are trained to practice four-handed dentistry. The program teaches students about office functions and how to work with patients as well as procedural competencies. Students gain career-focused, hands-on experience in a simulated dental clinic. Students also participate in two externships to learn dental assisting in the real world.

    Indiana University School of Dentistry

    • The Indiana University School of Dentistry offers a dental assistant program that lasts for two semesters and is 16 weeks in length. Distance Learning and Problem-Based Learning are two of the teaching methods that are available in this program. Students have unlimited access to various clinical settings and are taught by a dental faculty that is known internationally. Students can expect to devote 1,000 hours to the program in lectures, clinicals and laboratory instruction; in addition to this instruction, students are encouraged to participate in other activities, such as study groups as well as membership in the school's student professional association.
