Dental Assistant Programs in the D.C. Area

Dental assistants help dentists with various tasks including cleaning dental equipment, updating patient record information and helping make patients comfortable in the dental chair as they wait for their dental treatment. Most Washington D.C. dental assistants begin with a high school diploma. Opportunity for further education is available through certificate and diploma programs that generally last one year.

    • The Medix School dental assistant program provides students with the skills and knowledge to participate in a variety of dental office procedures and laboratory techniques. Topics covered include preliminary examination procedures, radiology, assisting at chair side using four handed dentistry, charting, appointment scheduling, keeping patient records and sterilizing instruments. Applicants are required to complete a personal interview prior to admission. The interview covers topics such as career aspirations, academic background and work experience. Average annual tuition cost at Medix as of 2010 is $10,600.

    Fortis College

    • The Fortis dental assistant program provides opportunity for hands-on learning related to techniques used in the treatment room. Students have opportunities to learn how to work chair-side as a dentist treats patients. Training is provided to prepare graduates to work in dental specialty practices, group dental practices, mobile dentist offices, insurance companies, dental school clinics, public health facilities and hospitals. Students must pass the national dental assistant exam to complete the program and receive their diploma. Applicants have the opportunity to meet with admissions representatives to learn more about the program, personalized financing options, financial aid, policies, procedures and services.

    HACC Harrisburg Campus

    • The HACC dental assisting program requires completing 40 credit hours of coursework over two semesters. The program includes courses such as English composition, introduction to human biology, interpersonal communications, office practices, dental radiology, dental specialties, and oral anatomy. Clinical field work is also incorporated into the course. For 2010-2011, the program cost totals approximately $11,700. Applicants are required to meet with the program director to develop an educational plan prior to submitting a clinical program application. Acceptance to the program is based on previous school work and work experience in a medical field. Program graduates receive a certificate and are eligible to sit for the Dental Assisting National Board examination.
