Dental Hygienist Programs in the Phoenix, AZ Area

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for dental hygienists are expected to increase by 36 percent by 2018. In order to obtain employment, an individual must complete an approved program, followed by obtaining a license in the state she wishes to practice.     • The Associate of Applied Science Dental Hygiene program offered by Phoenix College was designed with the intention to give its graduates the technical and interpersonal skills necessary to pursue a career as a dental hygienist. Students attending classes full time are expected to complete the program in two years. The school combines classroom training with clinical practices to give students a glimpse of the working dental environment. Courses include emergency medicine, pharmacology, oral pathology, periodontics, dental materials and community oral health. As of 2010, tuition costs are $71 per credit hour for Maricopa County residents, $96 per credit hour for other Arizona residents, and $280 per credit hour for out of state students.     Rio Salado College

    • Located just outside the Phoenix city limits in Tempe, Rio Salado College awards graduates with an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene. The school prepares students for an entry-level career working closely with both dentists and patients. Full time students can complete their degree in two years. Courses include the fields of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, oral pathology, emergency medicine, dental anatomy, dental radiology, prevention of dental disease, dental anesthesia, periodontics and practice management. Before graduation, students must also complete clinical practice experiences. As of the 2010 academic year, prospective students can expect tuition and expense costs of $15,000 for the entire program. Financial assistance opportunities are available.

    Mesa Community College

    • Mesa Community College, located on the east side of Phoenix in Mesa, offers students the opportunity to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in the field of Dental Hygiene in approximately two years. As one of the college's new degrees, the dental hygiene program admits no more than 20 students each academic year. Students receive training in the fields of pharmacology, oral pathology, dental hygiene, dental anatomy, periodontics, emergency medicine and dental anesthesia. In addition, students must complete clinical practice experiences through the A.T. Still University Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. Tuition costs for the 2010 academic year at Mesa Community College are $71 per credit hour for Maricopa County residents and $96 per credit hour for all other students. Financial aid options are available for qualified students.
