LPN Programs in the Springfield, Massachusetts, area

Licensed practical nurses care for sick and injured patients by recording vital signs, giving injections, dressing wounds and assisting with personal hygiene. LPN training programs are generally about one year long and lead to state licenses. Registered nurses differ from LPNs, as they are fully licensed and able to provide medications. The curriculum consists of 67 credits and coursework in nursing, anatomy and physiology, social sciences and a senior seminar.

    Holyoke Community College

    • Located in Holyoke, Massachusetts, approximately 15 miles from Springfield, is Holyoke Community College. HCC serves more than 9,000 students annually and, according to its website, has the highest transfer rate of any community college in the state. Many students who earn their associate degree here transfer to one of the 27 colleges and universities holding articulation agreements with HCC. The practical nursing certificate program prepares students to pass the NCLEX-PN exam to become practical nurses. It consists of 42 credits in foundation nursing courses, human development, human biology and practical nursing care. Students are also required to participate in clinical experiences. Graduates of the program rank in the 80th percentile or better NCLEX-PN state and national tests, and 90% will pass the exam the first time, according to the college's website.

    Porter and Chester Institute

    • Porter and Chester Institute has five campuses across Connecticut and three in Massachusetts. The Enfield, Connecticut, location, which is about 20 miles from Springfield, offers a 15-month practical nursing program. It prepares students for careers in doctors' offices and hospitals, and provides hands-on training through clinical settings. Students who have completed the program are trained to pass the state practical licensing examination. The school focuses on teaching students the skills that employers look for in job candidates and providing instructors who have worked directly in the field, according to the college's website.
