LPN Courses in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development predicts that the demand for licensed practical nurses (LPN) in the state will increase by nearly 12 percent from 2006 through 2016. To become an LPN in the state, nurses must complete an educational training courses approved by the Massachusetts Office of Health and Human Services. A number of private and public institutions in the state offer such programs.

    • The Medical Professional Institute is a private career college in Malden. The school boasts an average class size of only nine students, allowing students to receive individualized attention during classroom and laboratory work. To enroll in the practical nursing program, students must have a high school diploma and pass two placement and skills tests. Courses included in the curriculum include anatomy, medical terminology and pharmacology. An externship is required prior to graduation. The school participates in federal grant and loan programs. Job placement assistance is available for all students for up to one year after graduation. Through this service, students can receive help with resume-writing, interview preparation and job search assistance.

    Roxbury Community College

    • Located in Boston, Roxbury Community College is a public, two-year institution with more than 2,400 for-credit students. Admissions requirements for the college's practical nursing certificate program include passing a criminal background check and prerequisite coursework in psychology and human growth. During the first two phases of the program, students spend seven hours in the classroom, three hours in laboratories and 14 hours in clinical settings each week. The final course consists entirely of clinical experience hours. Federal and state financial aid is available for qualified students, and Massachusetts residents receive discounted tuition rates. The Career Services Center at the college provides assistance with resumes, interviews and job searching. Advising, personal counseling and tutoring are available for all students.

    Quinsigamond Community College

    • Home to more than 13,000 students, Quinsigamond Community College is a public institution in Worcester, Massachusetts. To enter the LPN program at the college, students need only a high school diploma or GED and acceptable scores on a placement examination. The one-year course of study features a variety of classes in health, social and life sciences, such as psychology, human development, pharmacology, surgical nursing, nutrition, pediatrics and obstetrics. Forms of financial aid available to eligible students include federal and state loans and grants, college-sponsored payment plans, work-study placements, private loans and institutional scholarships. A daycare center is located on-site to provide low-cost childcare for students with children.
