Kennedy King College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, provides a one-year practical nursing certificate program. Students wishing to enroll in the program will need to complete certain prerequisite and co-requisite courses along with a pre-admission exam. Once accepted, students will learn the basic knowledge and theory of nursing. The programs prepares students to take the National Council of Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) upon graduation.

Morton College only enrolls a limited number of students to the program each year. It uses competitive enrollment to seek the best candidates for its health-career programs. Students in the practical nursing program will experience hands-on training through clinical learning experiences. Students that earn their LPN certificate may continue their education at Morton College to become a registered nurse.

Tritron College, located 14 miles from downtown Chicago, provides students the opportunity to obtain a certificate in practical nursing. Students seeking a practical nursing certificate will receive the clinical training and knowledge needed to pass the NCLEX for the practical nurse. Triton College also offers practical nursing students the opportunity to continue their education and earn an associate in applied science degree for nursing.

The one-year program educates students in the fundamentals of nursing and includes clinical experiences. The program curriculum prepares students to be active members of a health-care team and provides a basis for career advancement within the nursing field. Enrolled students who are actively employed as Certified Nurse Assistants will receive credit for basic nursing skills.
