Dental Assistant Programs in the Akron, Ohio Area

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services predicts that the demand for dental assistants in the Akron, Ohio area will increase by more than 29 percent from 2006 through 2016. Entry into the field of dental assisting typically requires secondary vocational or post-secondary education in the form of a diploma, certificate or associate degree. A small number of public and private schools in the Akron area offer programs resulting in such credentials.
  1. Polaris Career Center

    • Located in Middleburg Heights, Polaris Career Center is approximately 31 miles from Akron (around 33 minutes by automobile). A public, vocational and technical school, the school is a member of the University System of Ohio. The school offers dental assisting programs for both eleventh and twelvth grade secondary-school students and for adults. The latter program requires 900 hours of training with courses held during the evening hours to accommodate adults' work schedules. Both programs cover nutrition, infection control, anatomy, radiology, computer science and practice management. The training school has a guaranteed credit transfer agreement with Case Western Reserve University, allowing students who graduate from the adult program and successfully gain certification in the field to automatically meet all the prerequisite requirements for the college's advanced chair-side dental assisting degree program. For high school students in the Polaris Career Center service area, the dental assisting program is free. Federal financial aid is available for eligible adult students.

    Stark State College

    • A public, two-year post-secondary education, Stark State College is in North Canton, approximately 18 miles from Akron (around 26 minutes by automobile). The school grants a certificate in dental assisting through a program that requires two years of full-time study to complete. Among the courses required for the program are radiography, dental materials, chemistry, anatomy, sociology, psychology and business communication. The college offers its dental assisting classes during daylight, evening and weekend hours. A clinical internship is included in the curriculum. The college participates in federal and state financial aid programs and offers a limited number of institutional scholarships. Job placement assistance is available.

    Akron Institute

    • Affiliated with Herzing University of Wisconsin, the Akron Institute is a private, for-profit allied health training school. The college grants a two-year associate of applied science degree in dental assisting. Courses required by the curriculum include radiology, chair-side assisting, dental management, ethics, mathematics, speech and computer science. All students must complete a clinical internship prior to graduation. The college also offers a one-year diploma program in dental assisting. In addition to federal and state loans and grants, the school participates in federal work-study programs and grants a limited number of scholarships. Job placement assistance is given through the college's Career Services department.
