Centura College offers three dental assistant programs at its Norfolk campus that are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation; these include a dental assisting diploma, an expanded dental assisting diploma and an Associate of Occupational Science degree in dental assisting. The dental assisting diploma program gives students the basic education and skills needed to become an entry-level dental assistant. The expanded dental assisting program is for those who are already dental assistants and wish to obtain further education to perform more complex tasks. Those who want to pursue an Associate of Occupational Science degree will receive more in-depth and advanced training than the diploma programs.

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, located in Richmond, is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and offers a career studies certificate in dental assisting. This program provides students with the training and education needed to assist dentists with a variety of services. This program provides students with on-site training for their externship at nearby dental clinics and offices. J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College also offers an option to become a member of the American Dental Assistant Association upon graduation.

Practical Dental Assisting of Virginia Beach opened in 1999 and offers a certificate program for dental assisting; with this program you can take your classes in the morning or afternoon. The school is approved by the Virginia Council of Higher Education and has more than 40 students graduating each year. In addition to the actual classroom education, students are required to complete an externship at a dental office for a total of 160 hours. Upon graduation, students become members of the National Dental Assistant Association and also receive a certificate for Virginia Radiation Safety.
