Seminary Schools in the Philadelphia Area

In or near the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, several seminary schools emphasize different denominations. Most offer student housing, and even though they have a religious emphasis, many accept students of all religious beliefs. Different types of degrees, certificates and learning opportunities are available. Each school has a website with information about what is needed for admission and planning your education.
  1. Lutheran

    • The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) educates students from nearly 30 different denominations. Although the seminary is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the goal is to provide a scriptural education for students of all types of religions and circumstances. LTSP is in the northwest area of Philadelphia, and the campus sits on 14 acres. Prospective students are invited to come visit to see what the school is about, and during your visit, LTSP offers to "feed and house you at our expense." While on campus, you can talk with other students, join in the classes, and ask questions of the staff and faculty. LTSP offers degrees at the post-graduate level.

    Baptist

    • Palmer Theological Seminary is located in Wynnewood, PA, about 10 miles from Philadelphia. The seminary is described as being "conservative, yet progressive." The students are mainly Baptist, but other denominations are also welcome. The coursework is traditional, but the campus is diverse, with students of many varying opinions and experiences. Palmer is committed to helping those in society most vulnerable and administering evangelism to enhance spiritual development. Many on-campus activities are organized, so students can interact with all types of people, in order be successful in the diverse world in which they will eventually be minsters to. Palmer offers two master's degree programs and a master's degree which can be earned in conjunction with a non-religious degree.

    Catholic

    • Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary is for men called to the priesthood.

      Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary is located in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles from Philadelphia. Students accepted at Saint Charles are those that feel they have been called to the Catholic priesthood. The seminary's educational goals are building up the "four pillars" which guide the formation and development of men towards the priesthood: "human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral." The seminary strives to create the necessary "priestly qualities" in these men's lives. The hope is that the seminarians will grow into men who have a love of service and a strong priestly character. Saint Charles Borromeo accepts undergraduates and college graduates.

    Reformed Faith

    • At Westminster Theological Seminary, the main focus of study is the bible.

      The Westminster Theological Seminary is located about four miles from Philadelphia, in the city of Glenside. The cornerstone of Westminster's degree programs is study of the Bible, and to expose the biblical truth, known as the Reformed faith. They strive to "form men for the Gospel ministry." This formation is accomplished by not only theological training, but also development of the religious life of students. The seminary feels that the educational preparation of students is tied to the development of a character that will serve a Christian ministry. Westminster Theological Seminary offers certificate programs, master's and doctorate degrees.
