Virginia Apprenticeship Programs

According to the United States Census Bureau statistics, almost 200,000 Virginians worked in construction-related trades, such as plumbing, welding and electrical, in 2001. Students learn these trades and earn journeyman licensure while completing paid training apprenticeship programs offered at Virginia community and technical colleges. Typically offered in tandem with the Virginia Department of Labor or a local trade organization, apprenticeship programs in Virginia are also available in the fields of culinary arts and cosmetology.
  1. Northern Virginia Community College

    • Founded in 1964, Northern Virginia Community College is part of the Virginia Community College System. A public, two-year community college in the suburban Virginia community of Annandale, Northern Virginia Community College offers more than 160 certificate and associate degree programs. The college additionally features a two-semester apprenticeship program in culinary arts. Under the auspices of the American Culinary Federation, Northern Virginia's culinary arts apprenticeship requires students to complete 6,000 hours of paid training at an assigned restaurant, club or hotel. Students must also complete related course work at the college, which includes Garde Manger, Menu Planning and Principles of Baking.

    Independent Electrical Contractors

    • Independent Electrical Contractors is a trade organization that operates chapters throughout the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area. The organization offers a four-year apprenticeship program for those interested in pursuing electrical journeyman licensure. With three training sites in Virginia, IEC offers supplementary classroom instruction at Northern Virginia Community College, Spotsylvania Career & Technical Center and at Paul D. Camp Community College. In addition to 8,000 hours of paid, on-the-job training, students must also take courses from a curriculum infused with basic mathematics, electrical terminology and safety skills education. Students matriculated into IEC's electrical apprenticeships can earn credits towards an associate or bachelor's degree in a related field.

    Lord Fairfax Community College

    • Established in 1970, Lord Fairfax Community College is a public two-year college in the rural, northern Virginia community of Middletown. The college's academic catalog includes more than 75 associate degree and certificate programs of study, as well as workforce education programs and continuing education studies. Fairfax features several flexible apprenticeship options in plumbing, welding, cosmetology and HVAC. In conjunction with the Virginia Department of Labor, students take supplementary instruction at the college upon securing a paid apprenticeship to work with a sponsoring employer.
