Diagnostic Medical Sonography Programs in Virginia

Diagnostic medical sonography is a growing career field. Sonograms, or ultrasounds as they are commonly called, were once thought to be limited to pregnancy diagnostics. Now, sonograms are used to diagnose a variety of ailments from kidney and gallbladder problems to heart irregularities. Community colleges in Virginia offer programs in diagnostic medical sonography to help prepare you for your new career.
  1. Tidewater Community College

    • Tidewater Community College offers an Associate in Applied Science degree in diagnostic medical sonography. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In addition, this program is accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. The program is very competitive and space is limited. The school provides an open house on the third Thursday of each month so that prospective students can acquaint themselves with the program.

    Northern Virginia Community College

    • Northern Virginia Community College offers a career studies certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography. The competitive program combines classroom instruction with clinical experience. While the course is based on the medical education campus, many of the core requirements and prerequisites for the course may be taken online or at one of the other campuses. Clinical experience is obtained at Washington metropolitan health care facilities or local community groups. Local residents are given priority for admission over out-of-state and international students.

    Southwest Virginia Community College

    • Southwest Virginia Community College offers a career studies certificate program in echocardiography, a specialized sonography field which studies the heart. To be eligible for this program, students must already be graduates of a nursing or diagnostic medical sonography program. The program is three semesters in length and includes both classroom and clinical instruction. While the students will be prepared for entry-level positions upon completion of this program, those who want registry credentialing will have to complete 1,680 hours of work in an echocardiography laboratory.
