Colleges in Virginia with Diagnostic Sonography Programs

Sonography is a diagnostic tool used in many medical facilities. Sonography uses sound waves to create an image of tissues, organs and blood vessels throughout the body. A college education is required to achieve certification as an ultrasound technician, or sonographer. Several schools in Virginia offer programs in diagnostic sonography. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary for diagnostic sonographers was $61,980 in May 2008.
  1. Tidewater Community College

    • Tidewater Community College (TCC) has campuses in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake, Virginia, and offers an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Medical Sonography. The diagnostic sonography program at TCC takes approximately five semesters to complete. An open house for prospective students is held at the Virginia Beach campus in the Lynnhaven Building every third Thursday of each month. TCC's diagnostic sonography program requires an application in addition to the normal enrollment process for the college. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

    Sentara College of Health Sciences

    • Sentara College of Health Sciences is located is Chesapeake, Virginia, and offers programs for Peripheral Vascular Technologist and Echocardiography Technologist in sonography. An echocardiography technologist performs sonograms of the heart and a peripheral vascular technologist performs sonograms of blood vessels. Sentara is accredited by the CAAHEP, The Accreditation Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), and is a certified private vocational institution through the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

    Northern Virginia Community College

    • Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is based in Annandale, Virginia, and offers an Associate Degree in Applied Science for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. To obtain certification in sonography at NOVA, a separate application must be completed for the Allied Health and Nursing Program, which offers instructional and clinical training. This college has limited space in this area of study. However, Virginia residents have a greater chance of gaining access to the program than out-of-state and international students.

    Southwest Virginia Community College

    • Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) is located in Cedar Bluff, Virginia. SWCC offers a program for echocardiography certification. This program provides instructional and clinical training but does not offer the required 1,680 hours of training for candidates to register with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Educational requirements include completed coursework in anatomy and biology prior to applying.
