California Colleges With Pre-Med Programs

Being a doctor is considered one of the most prestigious and respected professions in the world, but earning a degree and completing other requirements takes an average of 11 years. The beginning of this process starts as an undergraduate student enrolled in a pre-med program. Several California colleges provide top pre-med programs.
  1. Azusa Pacific University

    • Less than 30 miles east of Los Angeles, Azusa Pacific University offers more than 80 degree programs, including a top-rated pre-med program. Ranked as one of U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges six years running, Azusa provides an education that prepares students for medical careers, research and public health. Students have access to an adviser who specializes in their field, as well as an advisory committee and no-cost career seminars and a required review course for the MCAT, Medical College Admission Test, led by a pre-medical adviser.

    Mount St Mary's College

    • In Los Angeles, Mount St. Mary’s is a Catholic oriented university that is primarily female-oriented and home to nationally recognized academic programs. Founded in 1925, the school has built a curriculum dedicated to social and ethical ideals promoted by the Catholic religion. The Department of Biological Sciences provides students the opportunity to focus on pre-med, pre-dental, pre-pharmacy or pre-veterinary programs. Each program provides hands-on lab training with a combination of liberal arts classes that most med schools look for in applicants. The program provides MCAT preparation and counselors who are familiar with the graduate school application process.

    Scripps College

    • About 40 miles west of Los Angeles, Scripps College was founded in 1926. The women-only college in The Claremont College system, the school provides more than 50 degree options, including a selection of science degrees targeted to pre-med students. Pre-med majors may choose a focus on biology, chemistry or physics, as well as a combination of these areas. Any of these can transfer to a graduate degree in medicine, as well as opportunities in areas such as genetic engineering. Students must complete the program with a minimal GPA, as well as complete an individual research project that becomes the basis of a senior thesis.

    University of California

    • The University of California provides pre-med programs at three of its campuses, Berkeley, Davis and Los Angeles. Potential medical students choose from the schools of biology, chemistry or physics, all of which require a minimum B average in all classes and the completion of a senior research project and thesis. Students are provided with experience counselors and advisers who are familiar with the medical school admission process and requirements.
