Named for an Illinois Congressman and Civil War general, John A. Logan College is a community college located in the southern Illinois city of Carterville. Established in 1967, Logan College features an array of majors in academic departments like English, information technology and business. The college's cardiac diagnostic medical sonography program is housed with the allied health and public service division. The college recommends that students have a strong background in mathematics and physics prior to applying to the 18-month associate degree program. The program's curriculum features mostly cardiac-related specialty courses like cardiac anatomy and physiology, cardiac ultrasound imaging and cardiac seminar.

Founded in 1962, the college grants associate degrees and certificates in areas of study ranging from business and communications, respiratory therapy and robotics technology. The college's diagnostic medical sonography program is a three-semester certificate program. Prior to matriculating into the program, sonography students must already possess an associate degree and have passed courses in physics, college algebra, medical terminology and in English composition with satisfactory marks. Other prerequisites are also required. The program's curriculum includes courses such as clinical foundations of ultrasound and medical ethics. Students can choose among concentrations in vascular technology, cardiac sonography and medical sonography.

Established in 1973, Austin Community College is located in the in the Texas capital. Today the college's extensive catalog of more than 200 academic programs includes associate degree, certificate and transfer programs, as well as adult education and distance-learning opportunities. Austin's department of sonography features three degree plans, including an associate degree program in diagnostic medical sonography. The five-semester program's curriculum combines general education coursework with advanced study in sonography. Pathophysiology, sonographic sectional anatomy and sonography of abdominopelvic pathology are just a few of the courses that students take in the latter semesters of the program. Prior to matriculating to Austin's diagnostic medical sonography program, students must complete prerequisite courses like college algebra, English composition and conceptual physics, among others. The program also features several areas of concentration including doppler physics and hemodynamics, adult echocardiography and ultrasound instrumentation.
