Oakland, California, is home to colleges, universities and branch campuses of state public colleges, as well as community colleges and technical institutes. Oakland's Merritt College and Laney College are both part of the Peralta Community College District of northern Alameda County. Merritt College also features a variety of student activities and organizations, including Cross Country and men's soccer, as well as men's and women's basketball.     Laney College

    • Founded in 1948, Laney College is a part of the Oakland area's Peralta Community College District of the California Community College system. With more than 70 academic degree programs, the college features associate and certificate degree programs, as well as transfer programs for students who wish to pursue advanced degrees at California colleges and universities. From English and environmental control technology to photography and physics, Laney's extensive selection of majors is housed within the college's five divisions. In addition to the college's academic programs, students also can participate in vibrant student activities such as intercollegiate sports teams and student government, as well as a host of other clubs and student organizations. Laney College received accreditation from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges in 2009.

    Institute of Medical Education

    • Oakland's Institute of Medical Education features vocational training in medical and other allied health fields. Some of the school's programs include training so that students can become a medical assistant, phlebotomy technician, ultrasound technologist and dental hygienist, among others. Each program's curriculum is centered around clinical and lab work, as well as required externships, in addition to classroom study. Many of the institute's certificate-granting programs can be completed in less than a year. Financial aide is available for qualified students. The Institute of Medical Education is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and also has a campus in San Jose, California.
