With its main campus in Newark, Ohio, approximately 40 miles east of Columbus, public Central Ohio Technical College is home to approximately 4,000 students. The college offers two associate of applied science degree programs in medical sonography: one in cardiovascular ultrasound and the other in general sonography, which includes abdominal, gynecological and obstetric imaging. Both programs require two years of full-time study to complete. For admission to either course of study, applicants must show proof of completed prerequisite coursework in high school or college biology, college-level chemistry, college algebra and English composition. Students must also complete an eight-hour clinical observation of a licensed sonographer in a medical clinic or hospital and pass a criminal background check and drug screening. Once admitted, students complete four clinical rotations and courses in psychology, anatomy, medical terminology, first aid, cultural diversity, physics and computer science. The college participates in federal and state loan and grant and veteran's benefits financial aid programs. An on-campus day-care facility provides low-cost child care for students' children.

Founded in 1963 and home to more than 55,000 students, Cuyahoga Community College is the oldest and largest community college in the state of Ohio. Located in Cleveland, the college offers an associate of applied science degree in diagnostic medical sonography as well as a certificate program for individuals who already possess a minimum of an associate degree in a healthcare-related field like nursing, respiratory therapy or radiologic technology. Prerequisites for admission to the degree program include a four- to eight-hour observation of a sonographer and college-level coursework in composition, algebra, anatomy, medical terminology, introductory sonography and patient care. Lasting two years, the degree program allows students to specialize in abdominal ultrasound, echocardiography (sonography of the heart), obstetric and gynecological ultrasound and vascular sonography (ultrasound of the blood vessels and circulatory system). In addition to federal and state financial aid programs, Cuyahoga Community College offers a limited number of work-study placements and institutional scholarships. Situated in Perrysburg, a suburb of Toledo, Ohio, Owens Community College has an enrollment of more than 45,000 students with an average class size of 15. Among the requirements for admission to the college's associate of applied science degree program in diagnostic medical sonography, students must submit ACT college admission test scores, participate in an eight-hour sonography observation and complete prerequisites in high school and college-level algebra and chemistry. In addition to courses in general obstetric, abdominal and gynecologic sonography, the two-year program also requires students to take classes in computer systems, English, psychology, anatomy, public speaking, medical sociology sound principles, ultrasound physics and medical terminology. Four clinical rotations are mandatory for graduation. Eligible students can benefit from grants, loans, work-study and institutional scholarships while attending Owens.
