Shawnee State University in Portsmouth is 24 miles south of Piketon. The university serves about 4,600 students, as of 2010. Shawnee State University provides the range of degree programs of a larger campus in a more intimate setting. Students can pursue bachelor's degree in arts, individualized studies, fine arts or science. Associate degrees can be attained in applied business, applied science or arts. A variety of minors and certificates can complement a degree, and select master's degree programs are offered as well. The college provides student housing, financial aid and athletics to interested students.

Daymar College is located about 22 miles east of Piketon in New Boston. Students at Daymar College can specialize in business management, criminal justice, medical assisting and pharmacy technician studies. All programs offer a two-year associate's degree on completion. The college offers an online admission process and financial aid and scholarships to those who qualify. Both on-campus and online courses are available. The college has 16 campuses across the Midwest.

The Paramount Beauty Academy is located 24 miles south of Piketon in Portsmouth. Students at the cosmetology school focus on esthetics, such as facials, massages and skin care techniques, and cosmetology, such as make-up, hair and nail technology. The school schedules day and evening classes, and also accepts part-time students. Eligible students must have at least an eighth-grade education and be 16 years of age. Financial aid is available to those who qualify, but can only be obtained by those who have passed a specific test or attained a GED or high school diploma.
