Diagnostic Medical Sonography Schools in Florida

According to the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, there are 11 schools in Florida that offer accredited training programs in diagnostic medical sonography. These schools prepare graduates for the licensure examination directed by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

    • Central Florida Institute offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in diagnostic medical sonography (DMS) at two locations in Florida: Orlando and Palm Harbor.     Broward College

    • Broward College offers a two-year Associate in Science degree with a major in DMS as well as a 13- to 14-month certificate option. Coursework includes abdominal and obstetric-gynecological sonography, circulatory system ultrasound, imaging, sonographic physics and small parts sonography.

    Florida Hospital College of Health Science

    • The Florida Hospital College of Health Science offers both Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science completion programs with a major in DMS. Students of the associate program must choose one of two areas of concentration: general ultrasound, which focuses on obstetrics, gynecology, abdominal parts and superficial structures, and cardiovascular, which focuses on echocardiography and vascular technology. An advanced placement option with the bachelor's program is available for applicants who hold a certificate or degree in sonography or the radiologic sciences, such as radiography, nuclear medicine technology or radiation therapy.

    • Hillsborough Community College offers an associate degree program in DMS. Applicants must complete prerequisite coursework in English, anatomy and physiology, algebra and physics in order to be considered for admission.     • The Institute of Allied Medical Professions offers both an 18-month diploma and a two-year Associate in Science degree in DMS. Coursework includes anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, physics and instrumentation of ultrasound, abdominal and obstetric-gynecological sonography, cardiac and vascular ultrasound technology and hands-on laboratory applications.

    Keiser University

    • Keiser University offers an Associate of Science in sonography at two locations: Daytona Beach and Ft. Lauderdale.     • Nova Southeastern University offers both Bachelor of Health Science and Master of Health Science degrees in vascular sonography. Both programs focus specifically on the emerging specialty of ultrasound applications for the vascular system, including the anatomy, physiology and possible abnormalities associated with arteries and veins.

Applicants must be certified as radiologic technologists or hold at minimum an associate degree in a healthcare-related field.
