St. Louis Community College offers a full-time certificate of proficiency program in diagnostic medical sonography. Candidates must hold at least an associate degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Applicants must also complete prerequisite coursework in anatomy and physiology, physics, algebra, medical terminology, English and oral communications with a minimum grade of C. Students choose from three concentrations: medical sonography, cardiac sonography or vascular sonography. All program options require both clinical training and a professional practicum course.

The School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography at Cox College offers a 21-month training program. Candidates must be graduates of a radiological technology training program and be either eligible for registration or currently registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). This program is comprised of theoretical classroom instruction, simulated laboratory practice and intensive practical training in a clinical setting. Students are trained in general, vascular and cardiovascular sonographic techniques and procedures.

Applicants must hold an American College Testing (ACT) score of 22. In addition to general education and prerequisite coursework in the liberal arts, social science and medical sciences, students receive extensive theoretical and practical hands-on training in the specialty areas of abdominal ultrasound, obstetric and gynecological sonography, echocardiography and vascular technology.

The School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography at Saint Luke’s Hospital at Kansas City offers a full-time 18-month certificate program. This program is comprised of extensive clinical and theoretical instruction in the physics of ultrasound, abdominal sonography, obstetric and gynecological sonography, fetal echocardiography, neurosonography and vascular ultrasound technology. In order to be considered for admission, candidates must be graduates of either a two-year allied health training program such as radiologic technology, nursing, or respiratory therapy, or a four-year baccalaureate program in biology or health science. All applicants must also have completed coursework in communications, math, physics, anatomy and physiology or biology, medical terminology, and patient care with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
