Diagnostic Medical Sonography Schools in New Jersey

Also known as ultrasound, diagnostic medical sonography refers to the production of computerized images of the human body through the use of ultrasonic waves. It is used by medical physicians to identify and treat a range of health conditions and injuries. According to the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, there are currently five schools in New Jersey that offer accredited training programs in diagnostic medical sonography.
  1. Bergen Community College

    • Bergen Community College offers an associate in applied science degree program in diagnostic medical sonography. Candidates must hold a high school diploma with a GPA of 2.5 that includes coursework in physics, biology and algebra. This program is two-year in length and consists of coursework in anatomy and physiology, ultrasound physics and instrumentation, patient care techniques, medical imaging, abdominal sonography, obstetric and gynecological sonography, echocardiography, vascular sonography and clinical training.

    Gloucester County College

    • An associate in applied science degree in diagnostic medical sonography is offered by Gloucester County College. This program consists of 22 months of both theoretical and practical hands-on training that includes general education coursework in English, anatomy and physiology, social science, humanities, psychology and physics. Specialized courses include medical imaging, patient care, cross-sectional anatomy, abdominal sonography, sonographic interpretation, obstetric and gynecological sonography, vascular ultrasound and echocardiography.

    University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey

    • The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey offers both an undergraduate certificate and a Bachelor of Science in Allied Health Technologies with a major in diagnostic medical sonography. Candidates of the baccalaureate degree must have completed either a two-year program in an allied health care field or prerequisite coursework in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, algebra, physics and English with a GPA of at least 2.75. The certificate program is designed for graduates of associate degree programs in an allied health care field or the equivalent amount of college-level coursework. Students receive extensive instruction in sonographic theory and techniques, including abdominal scanning, obstetric and gyneocological ultrasound, neruosonography, echocardiography and vascular testing.

      Both programs are affiliated with multiple medical centers and hospitals throughout New Jersey where students can complete their clinical training requirements.

    Sanford-Brown Institute

    • In addition to multiple locations throughout the United States, the Sanford-Brown Institute offers a certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography at its Iselin campus in New Jersey. Alongside theoretical instruction in anatomy and physiology, students are trained in sonographic techniques for the abdomen, female reproductive system and the vascular system through the use of an on-campus imaging laboratory and through off-site professional clinical experience.

    Muhlenberg Harold B and Dorothy A Snyder Schools

    • The Muhlenberg Harold B and Dorothy A Snyder Schools of Nursing, Medical Imaging and Therapeutic Sciences, in conjunction with JFK Medical Center, offers an associate in science degree in diagnostic medical sonography. This program consists of two semesters of general education coursework in the liberal arts and sciences followed by 20 months of profession occupational training. Coursework includes contemporary issues in health care, patient care, anatomy, ultrasound physics and instrumentation, abdominal and pelvic ultrasound, obstetrical sonography and clinical training.
