The University of Oxford is one of the top medical schools in the world. Medical studies in the U.K. differ somewhat from those in the United States, in that students pursue medical studies at the undergraduate level. Students first pursue pre-clinical studies, before moving on to clinical training and then graduate studies. In addition to the more traditional medical program, Oxford offers programs in biomedical science, biochemistry, physiological sciences, experimental psychology and psychology, physiology, and philosophy. Extensive graduate studies--which lead to masters and PhD degrees--are also offered.

The University of Cambridge provides a top-notch medical school. Like the program at Oxford, Cambridge students begin their medical studies with pre-clinical courses, before moving on to clinical and graduate studies. Graduate studies take four years to complete. Students can pursue the M.D. or the doctor of surgery degree, as well as a PhD. Graduate research is divided into three broad categories: integrated functional systems, applied research, and genomes and gene products.

Harvard Medical School is the cream of the crop among the world's medical school programs. Harvard's annual research budget of over $540 million makes it the highest funded medical research institution in the United States. Harvard has developed what it terms the "New Pathway M.D. Program," a curriculum that emphasizes medical practice in conjunction with lifelong research in the medical field. Harvard also offers a "Health Science Technology M.D. program" that emphasizes medical research over medical practice. Harvard also offers the master of public health, master of public policy, master of business administration and the PhD in conjunction with the M.D.
