Medical Schools in Europe

Choosing the right medical school is an important decision. Most of the best medical schools in the world are located in the U.S., so finding one abroad can take some research and effort. Students who are considering studying medicine abroad should know that some of the highest rated non-American medical schools are in Europe.
  1. University of Cambridge

    • Many of the best European medical schools are found in the United Kingdom. In fact, two of the top three worldwide are located in the U.K., according to the Times Higher Education Supplement, which rates colleges and universities globally.

Second only to Harvard, the University of Cambridge has one of the most recognized medical schools in the world. Part of its success can be traced to the university's commitment to research excellence and innovation. In its commitment to interdisciplinary medical research, the medical program offers a joint M.D. and Ph.D. degree. Research emphases include neuroscience, diabetes studies, women's health, endocrinology, and cardiovascular and cancer research, among many others. In cutting-edge research, Cambridge emphasizes such topics as genetics and stem cell research. Cambridge also houses a clinical school of medicine to train doctors to practice.

    University of Oxford

    • Falling just below Cambridge on the Times Higher Education Supplement list is the University of Oxford. Like Cambridge, Oxford is one of the most famous universities in the world and one of the oldest. Its school of medicine is renowned for its innovative research. Oxford is the home of several important research institutes and centers, including the Centre for Human Genetics. Like Cambridge, Oxford's list of research emphases and departments is extensive and includes nearly every area of medicine, such as clinical neurology, pediatrics, psychiatry and primary care.

    University of Heidelberg

    • On the European continent there are a number of well-respected medical schools that are also rated highly by the Times Supplement. Highest on that list outside of the U.K. is Germany's University of Heidelberg. Germany has a long, rich educational tradition stretching back as far as the European Enlightenment. It is not surprising that one of its top universities would also have a top-rated medical school.

The medical faculty at Heidelberg traces its history as far back as 1386 as one of the original university faculties. In the early 20th century it produced multiple Nobel Prize-winning researchers. The university consistently receives external funding that continues to make it a cutting-edge research institution. The medical school has five prominent research centers, including the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research. Heidelberg works closely with the national university in Munich and with Harvard. Research emphases include genetics, pathophysiology, forensic medicine and pharmacology.
